Sand casting
How to do sand casting #
Sand casting, also known as green sand casting, is a method commonly used in jewelry casting.
- Preparing the model: A model of the desired piece of jewelry is made using wax or resins. The model can be carved by hand or created using 3D modeling techniques.
- Preparing the mold: The model is placed in a molding box that is filled with a mix of sand and binders. This mix is known as casting sand. The sand is packed around the model to ensure an accurate reproduction of the details.
- Removing the model: Once the sand has hardened, the molding box is carefully removed and the wax model is extracted. This leaves a hollow space in the sand in the shape of the piece of jewelry.
- Casting: The prepared sand mold is placed in a furnace and heated to a temperature high enough to melt the metal to be poured. A specialized casting furnace is generally used.
- Pouring the metal: Once the metal has melted, it is poured quickly into the sand mold through a feed channel or funnel. The liquid metal flows into the empty space left by the wax model.
- Cooling and demolding: After the metal has solidified and cooled, the sand mold is broken to reveal the cast piece of jewelry. Burrs are removed and final finishing is done, such as polishing and setting precious stones if necessary.
Sand casting is a versatile and economical technique that allows jewelry pieces to be produced with fine and complex details. However, it is important to keep in mind that this method may require skill and experience to obtain high-quality results.
This casting method is also used in jewelry to create larger pieces or pieces of more complex shapes. It consists of making a mold of packed sand around a model or pattern. The molten metal is then poured into the mold and left to cool before the finished piece is removed.
